The Liver Pool
Hepatitis C
Multicultural Outreach presents "The Liver Pool," a one-hour program
hosted by Johanna Blanding-Koskinen, health advocate for people affected
by hepatitis C and HIV/AIDS. The Liver Pool addresses concerns and
issues relevant to the hep C community, interviewing guests in the
fields of medicine, social service and especially those personally
touched by the virus.
The numbers of
people infected by the hepatitis C virus have reached well over 5.3
million. This means that for every one person with HIV/AIDS, there
are six with hepatitis C. This virus silently destroys liver cells
and is the major cause of liver transplantation today.
Johanna speaks
passionately of her mission as an advocate: "People need to
recognize that everything we eat, drink, inhalf or absorb through the
skin has to be processed through the liver first. If your liver
isn't working, then there isn't a medication in the world that will help
you, whether you're suffering from a common cold, diabetes, high blood
pressure of heart disease. The liver is the organ by which
everything is processed. Without it, your body can't get what it
needs to heal or survive."
